My Very Own

I got it!
I finally got it!!

I dropped the hints... but that didn't work.

I just came out and asked if I could get it for myself
for my birthday.

Yay!!!

(Did I mention that I love this necklace???)

Snow?!?! This Early in October?!?!?!

I can't recall a fall where we got snow this early.

The leaves haven't even fallen off the trees yet--it's pretty cool--but hopefully it doesn't mean that it's going to be an extra long winter--we have long enough winters here in SD (November-April).

A Good Day for Blogging

For a long time now, I have wanted a new bed spread.

I had been just putting on our regular old, ugly looking blankets. Holey and dingy (Am I spelling those right?), they didn't do our beautiful bed justice--and I just put up with it because we aren't the type of people to go out and spend a fortune on a bed spread--we are too cheap too smart to spend that kind of money.

So, company was over a little while ago and the wife needed to go into our room for some privacy and I thought of how she would see our ultra-utilitarian {read: functional} room--with the home-school books stacked in plastic lockers on a little table and the piano/piano books on the other side of the room--oh, and just for good measure add to that the three white trash bags of stuff to take to GoodWill sitting next to the piano (among the other things my children bring in there).

I pondered what thoughts crossed her mind when she saw our very shabby bed covers and I thought for a moment that I wished that we had spent some money on one (years before anyone would have gone in there).

So after all that thinking about my bed and it's non-existent bed spread....I talked to myself about it and I talked to the Lord. I emphasized how cool it would be to have one that looked nice. like in the catalogs.

I dropped that wishful thinking and went on with my life--and then it showed up--out of nowhere....

My husband's Grandma was moving and called and asked if I wanted her old bedspread, I said yes, not thinking that it would be anything that was my style, but I wanted to honor her--and she came by and a new relationship started: me and that bed spread--beautiful.

So,
now my friends, if you come into my house, I will be thrilled to let you in my still ultra-utilitarian room, (don't mind the bags of stuff and the fan)--but this time it will have a gorgeous bed in it!

Ahh! The simple life. :)

(The lighting in the picture sure makes it look nice--it's hiding all of the "useful" stuff behind the photographer. ;0)

A Dawn

Tears flowing.
Eyes hurting.
Nose plugged up.

Wailing inside, and them on the outside.
Coming to the realization of something I had never thought of before.

I want to be loved.
I want to be missed.
I want a love from others that I have only found in my spouse.

I want friends that want to be more than just acquaintances.
People that want to be intricately woven into our lives.
People that would give their lives for us (and us for theirs).
I want relationships that are deeply meaningful and relationships that last.

I strive to meet these people that are a lot like us.
People that won't get bored at our "normal-ness" and puzzled by our "eccentricities".

People that are just like me and him, that just want simple things in life.

Not money.
Not mansions.
Just normal.

Phone Tag

My husband and I have had a volatile phone relationship in the years that we have been together. I don't know if it's him being too logical or me being too emotional... but I know that it for me, has been an issue.

With the new year right on the edge of our lives, I am trying to start a new, but small venture for myself: don't call my man, unless absolutely necessary. Three days down: 362 days to go.......

I have decided that even though we have the luxury of calling each other while he's at work, that it will just be better to not call him. There will be less conflict, less confusion and maybe we'll even miss each other more.

No more feeling like I am interrupting him at work. No more feeling insecure when his tone changes. No more of him misunderstanding what I am saying.

For him: no more interruptions. No more dealing with the wife misunderstanding what he's saying.

Today I had to ask him questions about something with our children.... I texted. It worked well, even though I still was feeling odd about "typing" something that would take 5 seconds to deal with over the phone. With texting, it took a good 15 minutes to get all the details worked out.... but he was riding back home from a place out of town and it worked out well enough.

Maybe this is wrong of me to think of as a solution, we'll see how it goes.....

Review: Prince Caspian

My four children, my husband and I are Narnia lovers. We devour the Radio Theatre of "The Chronicles of Narnia" when we go for long, or not so long drives in our vehicles. So going to the Narnia movies are like a national holiday in our house.

We went to the theatre at 3pm on it's opening day, only a tiny amount of "true Narnians" were in the cinema that day. We got the matinee' price, so what more could a person ask for?

I guess my own thoughts on the movie are that they didn't stick close enough to the book. C.S. Lewis had perfected it, so why change it? It was still a really good movie though.

I read a review on pluggedinonline.com about "Prince Caspian" and it mentioned there that the director made this movie more intense:

"Director Andrew Adamson seems well aware that he's pushing further than he did
before. "This film is probably a little darker and grittier than the last one,
partly because the children are older, making the story more adult in nature,"
he says. "In the last film, I think we went to some pretty dark places. Aslan's
death, certainly, is one of the darkest moments in the film. I think this movie
has the potential to be even more sinister. Miraz is potentially someone that we
might actually see in real life, which makes him and the story that much
darker." William Moseley, who plays Peter, adds, "The White Witch was scary, but
you've seen nothing until you've seen Miraz."

The violence/war scenes were decent in the fact that they were intentional on not showing any blood/guts. As a parent of a 6 year old, two 9 year olds and an 11 year old, I appreciated that immensely.

Some of the things that I was taken aback by in the movie was the tiny hint that there was an attraction between Susan and Caspian. I thought that this was unneccessary, and much too "what the world expects". I hated it at the end, when Susan kisses Caspian, how silly and it was totally out of character for her anyway. (By the way, my kids didn't appreciate that part of the movie at all~~they were squirming even before the 'kiss' had started....)

Another part of the movie that I thought that they horribly ruined was the scene when Lucy sees Aslan and tells the other children. In the book it is written as beautiful as poetry, standing for so much and saying an incredible amount about the relationships we all have with our real Aslan. (I blogged the excerpt of the book a few months ago.)

I still can't quite understand why they screwed with that part of the book. It just doesn't make sense.

I still enjoyed it though, and I will gladly go to all of the Narnia movies that Disney makes. I do wish though that they would talk to the writer/director over these movies so that they wouldn't change the really important parts of the book quite so much!

What are your thoughts?

P.S. I love Reepicheep in the books and radio theatre, he wasn't portrayed as well in the movie.

Just Another Irrelevant Post

My husband and I are not big spenders.
We try very hard to live under our means, and our lives have really been blessed by living this way. So, when something really cool happens, like finding the coolest couch and chair at an auction for an unbelievably good price, it's a time to celebrate!

These are the new additions to our family. A red mohair couch and chair, circa 1947.

Priceless.
